At Beyond Dyslexia Nevada we tutor with the Barton Spelling & Reading System which is multisensory, engaging students' visual, auditory, and kinesthetic senses to help them connect sounds with letters. The tutoring program was created by Susan Barton and is based on the Orton-Gillingham (OG) approach. Independent research has validated the effectiveness of the Barton System. The Barton program can help students of any age from elementary school through adults improve their reading and spelling.
To be a good candidate for the Barton System, a student must meet specific criteria:
Be at least 5 years old and in kindergarten,
Able to speak and comprehend spoken English,
Have an IQ of 71 or higher,
Struggle with spelling and sounding out unknown words,
Pass the program's screening test.
The sequence of levels is designed to build skills from the ground up. Students proceed sequentially through levels to ensure mastery before moving on. Tutoring is structured and systematic. Lessons are provided two or three times per week in 50-minute sessions.
